The History of Basketball: From Peach Basket to

NBA

Today, you see Kyrie-esque crossovers on TikTok, breathtaking dunk contests, and NBA jerseys worn as fashion statements. But do you know how it all began? Here's the story of a sport that started in a dusty gym... and now electrifies the entire world.

Basketball was born without a backboard!

The history of Basketball begins in winter 1891, in Springfield, Massachusetts. A Canadian professor, James Naismith, was looking for a way to keep his students occupied during the long, cold months. His challenge was to invent an indoor sport that was dynamic but without brutal contact.

He then attached two peach baskets to the gym walls and developed 13 simple rules. It was played with a soccer ball, and the goal was to score by throwing the ball into the opponent's basket. Basketball was born.

Originally, no dribbling, no three-point lines, no dunks. But very quickly, the game evolved and became popular.

The game spreads like wildfire

Gradually, basketball moved from gyms to high schools, then to university campuses, before spreading... around the world. By the early 1900s, it arrived in Europe, Asia, and then Latin America.

In 1936, it entered the Olympic Games in Berlin. And guess what? Naismith was there, watching his "invention" become a global sport. Respect.

1946: The NBA is born

You know the NBA? Of course. But did you know it was created to fill arenas… between hockey games? It all started in 1946 with the BAA, which merged with the NBL to form the NBA in 1949.

At first? It was old school. Slow, very physical game, no dunks. But that would change… very quickly.

The beginning of the real show

This is where basketball became a true spectacle. On one side, Larry Bird with the Celtics. On the other, Magic Johnson with the Lakers. A legendary rivalry. The game became faster, more stylish, and the NBA began to globalize.

The old-school jerseys from that era? Still just as much flow. If you want some, you know where to look 👉 Basket Connection
